Also known as the Press Pot, the Plunger
Pot, or Le Cafétiere. A little more work, but well worth
it. Not only does it produce some of the
best-tasting coffee in the world, it just looks
cool.
First: measure the correct amount of good
quality water (not any old H2O will do) into the
heating device of your choice and bring the
temperature of the water to just shy of boiling.
Next, grind your beans fairly coarse. Use 2 tablespoons of
ground coffee for every 6 oz. of water.
(Girly men can use 1 tablespoon if they prefer.)
Place them in the carafe and pour a little hot
water over them. Stir and allow the coffee to
"bloom" a bit (about as long as it takes you to
stick your nose into the carafe and smell a bit
of heaven.) Add the rest of the water and set
your watch for 4 minutes. Take your plunger and
push the grinds to the bottom. Drink up!
The Nuances: If the plunger goes to the bottom without any
resistance then your grind was too coarse. If
you had a difficult time pushing the plunger
down and perhaps found yourself spraying hot
coffee all over your Waldorf-Astoria bathrobe,
then your grind was too fine. Simply adjust it
for your next pot.
